Our first encounter with orcas occurred off Discovery Bay in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With another couple, we had been salmon fishing from a cabin cruiser. Ahead there was a disturbance in the water, then a pod of 12 or more orcas swam toward and past us on both sides of the boat. Although we have seen orcas several times since, the first encounter was the most exciting. A fisherman in an outboard boat was packing up his gear, saying that ended the fishing.
That wasn't the end of the excitement; later Sarah saw something like a torpedo racing toward our boat. Two bottle-nosed dolphins (cousins of orcas) dove under the boat and played in the bow wave for several minutes.
We had a delightful week in our home waters, the Strait and the San Juan islands.
